The Zen timepiece is a modern analog wristwatch that is inspired by the stylized organic geometry found in Japanese rock gardens, often referred to as Zen gardens. The circular and linear ridges found throughout the timepiece draws from the garden’s flowing gravel/sand pattern. These patterns are sculpted to represent the serenity of ripples in still water. Zen’s eleven-sided polygonal bezel allows the user to discern hour hand placement, maintaining visual simplicity without compromising functionality.
The tranquil design of Zen is in direct response to the fast-paced, constantly occupied lifestyle that the majority of us live today. Rare are the moments when we are able to put aside our preoccupations and distractions, which often creates stress and anxiety about how one distributes their time throughout the day. Zen is meant to provide a moment, even as brief as checking the time, where one is able to feel the calmness and tranquility of standing in the center of a well-cultivated Japanese rock garden.
My objective was to create a contemporary timepiece that retained the qualities of modernity, functionality, and luxury. Expanding upon the idea of what is necessary for an analog wristwatch, Zen was inspired by the balance of simplicity and functionality in Japanese rock gardens. These gardens, as well as the timepiece, contain minimal visual components strategically positioned to evoke feelings of serenity, calmness, and peace.
Rectangular watch hands sweep over the circular ridges of the watch face emulates the satisfying motion raking sand into descending sized symmetrical rings. The watch bezel provides an accentuated geometrical aesthetic while providing functionality for the user to easily discern the hour hand placement and read the time. The band has congruous linear ridges that flow into the watch face, creating harmony throughout both the timepiece and strap.
Bearing the tonal color scheme of a deep charcoal strap, polished silver case, and pale grey face; a nod to classic color ways of vulcanized rubber luxury sport watches.
